What Is RMFT Certification?

TL;DR
  • RMFT here means Radon Measurement Field Technician, a National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) credential for people who deploy and retrieve radon measurement...
  • The advertised exam has 95 questions (85 scored, 10 unscored), a 2-hour limit and a USD 125 nonrefundable fee per attempt.
  • Perform the Test (28%) and Evaluate the Test Site (24%) together make up just over half the blueprint.
  • RMFTs work under a supervising NRPP Measurement Professional within the same company, and supervisor changes must be reported within seven business days.

What the Credential Actually Is

The Radon Measurement Field Technician credential, abbreviated RMFT, is an entry-level professional certification for people who handle the hands-on side of radon testing. It verifies that a technician understands how to place, operate and retrieve radon measurement devices correctly, communicate with clients and document the work in a way that holds up to scrutiny.

If you have seen the acronym elsewhere, set that aside. This article covers only the radon credential. For a broader orientation to the term itself, see our explainers on what RMFT is, what RMFT stands for and the meaning of RMFT. This page goes a step further and walks through how the certification works from application to renewal.

Who Issues It and Where It Fits

The credential is issued by the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP). It is important to keep the NRPP tiers distinct, because the names are easy to confuse:

  • Radon Measurement Field Technician (RMFT): the field-level credential covered in this article.
  • NRPP Radon Measurement Professional (RMP): the supervising professional under whom an RMFT works. This is a separate credential with its own requirements.
  • NRSB Radon Measurement Technician (RMT): a different certification from a different body. It is not the same thing as the NRPP RMFT.

Think of the RMFT as the person in the field and the RMP as the professional who is accountable for the measurement program, including quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC). The two work together inside one company, which shapes both the application paperwork and the exam content.

What an RMFT Does on the Job

An RMFT deploys and retrieves radon measurement devices under the supervision of an NRPP Measurement Professional. In practice that means visiting properties, assessing whether a location is suitable for a test, placing devices according to protocol, keeping the test conditions intact, retrieving devices on schedule and handing clean documentation back to the supervising RMP.

The people who hire for this role are generally radon measurement and mitigation companies, home inspection firms that offer radon testing and similar businesses that employ a certified measurement professional. Because the credential requires a supervising RMP, a candidate typically needs an employer relationship in place before certification is complete. If you are exploring openings, our page on RMFT jobs covers the employer landscape in more detail.

Supervision is built into the credential: An RMFT does not operate independently. The application requires a Statement of Professional Responsibility from the supervising NRPP Measurement Professional, and the RMFT works under that RMP's QA/QC oversight within the same company. If your supervisor changes, you must report it within seven business days under the policy effective September 1, 2025.

Initial Certification Requirements

NRPP publishes a defined set of requirements for first-time certification. The pieces are:

  1. An approved measurement course of at least 12 hours, completed within two years of applying.
  2. A passing examination result that is no older than one year.
  3. A signed Code of Ethics.
  4. A photograph.
  5. A Statement of Professional Responsibility signed by the supervising NRPP Measurement Professional.
  6. The initial certification fee of USD 250, paid separately from the exam and training.

The two time windows matter. A course older than two years or an exam result older than one year can force you to repeat a step, so plan the sequence deliberately rather than finishing everything in whatever order is convenient. For a fuller walk-through of eligibility questions, read our RMFT requirements guide, and for training options see RMFT training.

The Exam Format and Registration Rules

As of the registration page reviewed on October 14, 2026, the advertised exam format (effective October 1, 2024) is as follows:

FeatureAdvertised Detail
Total questions95
Scored questions85
Unscored trial items10 (not identified to the candidate)
Time allowed2 hours
Exam feeUSD 125 per attempt, nonrefundable
DeliveryLive remote proctoring through Certiverse
Scheduling windowSchedule and complete within 30 days of purchase
Retakes30 days between attempts; no more than four attempts in 12 months

How passing works

The exam is criterion-referenced. Expert judgments of what competent performance looks like determine the passing standard, and the Candidate Handbook allows the threshold to reflect the difficulty of the specific exam form you receive. That is why you should be skeptical of any source quoting a single fixed percentage or pass rate. Our pages on the RMFT passing score and RMFT pass rate explain what can and cannot be said responsibly about this.

Exam-day conduct

Because the exam is remotely proctored, the rules are specific, and violating them can end an attempt:

  • You need a government-issued photo ID and must complete a room scan.
  • The exam platform supplies the reference documents MAH-2023 and MS-QA-2023, plus a calculator and formulas. You cannot bring your own reference materials, paper or calculator.
  • One authorized bathroom break of no more than five minutes is permitted.
  • If you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment, you must repurchase the exam.
Practice with the right tools: Because the platform provides MAH-2023, MS-QA-2023, a calculator and formulas, your preparation should focus on knowing where to look in those documents and how to apply them quickly, not on memorizing everything. Run timed practice on the RMFT practice test site with that open-reference mindset.

For scheduling specifics, see RMFT exam dates and deadlines.

The Five Exam Domains

The Candidate Handbook (document 3-007-4 V7, revised May 4, 2023, Appendix A) lists five weighted exam objectives. These are the official objectives the exam measures, not headings from any particular training course. The weights are:

DomainWeight
Domain 1: Communicate with the Client16%
Domain 2: Evaluate the Test Site24%
Domain 3: Perform the Test28%
Domain 4: Keep Records14%
Domain 5: Operate in an Ethical/Professional Manner18%

Domain 3: Perform the Test (28%)

The heaviest domain covers the core field task: setting up and running a measurement correctly.

  • Device placement, deployment and retrieval procedures
  • Maintaining test conditions and recognizing interference or tampering
  • Timing, documentation at deployment and retrieval, and handling of devices
  • Applying the standards in the supplied measurement references

Domain 2: Evaluate the Test Site (24%)

Before a device goes down, the technician must judge whether the location and conditions support a valid test.

  • Choosing suitable test locations within a building
  • Identifying conditions that could compromise results
  • Understanding what the client has or has not done to prepare the space
  • Knowing when to seek guidance from the supervising RMP

Domain 5: Operate in an Ethical/Professional Manner (18%)

This domain connects directly to the signed Code of Ethics and the supervisory structure.

  • Honest reporting and avoiding misrepresentation
  • Working within the scope of an RMFT under RMP supervision
  • Professional conduct with clients and colleagues

Domain 1: Communicate with the Client (16%)

Clear communication keeps tests valid and clients informed.

  • Explaining test conditions and what the client must do or avoid
  • Setting expectations about timing and next steps
  • Responding appropriately to client questions without overstepping your role

Domain 4: Keep Records (14%)

Defensible measurements depend on documentation.

  • Recording deployment and retrieval details accurately
  • Maintaining records that support QA/QC review
  • Understanding what must be handed to the supervising RMP

A Version Conflict You Should Know About

This is the part most competing articles skip. The live registration and certification pages still advertise the exam described above. However, a December 5, 2025 announcement from IEA/NRPP on new measurement certifications describes an approved replacement targeted for mid-2026, without a firm implementation date. According to that announcement, the replacement would involve:

  • 65 total items: 60 scored and 5 pilot items
  • A 90-minute time limit
  • An eight-hour initial course completed before exam registration
  • Two-hour device-specific training
  • Revised renewal eligibility allowing up to two Category II credits
  • Added chain-of-custody content
Verify before you commit: No replacement domain list or weights have been verified, so do not assume the five weights above apply to the announced exam, and do not assume a sixth domain exists. The retained blueprint describes the exam still advertised on the live registration page. Confirm with NRPP which version you will be assigned before you pay, and before you build a timed mock exam around a particular question count or time limit.

Where the Money Goes

Cost planning for this credential involves several separate line items, which is a common source of surprise:

  • Training course: priced by the provider, separate from NRPP fees.
  • Exam: USD 125 per attempt, nonrefundable. A retake means paying again.
  • Initial certification: USD 250, paid separately.
  • Renewal: USD 250, also separate.

Because the exam fee is nonrefundable and the scheduling window is 30 days from purchase, buy the exam only when you are ready to sit it. Our RMFT certification cost breakdown lays out how these pieces add up, and the ROI analysis helps you decide whether the investment fits your situation.

Renewal and Supervision Rules

Certification is not permanent. The current renewal cycle is two years and requires 8 Category I continuing education hours, including a mandatory four-hour standards overview. The renewal fee is USD 250.

Supervision remains part of staying certified, not just becoming certified. If the NRPP Measurement Professional you work under changes, you have seven business days to report it under the policy effective September 1, 2025. Missing that window is an avoidable administrative problem, so build the reporting step into your company's onboarding and offboarding routines.

Sequencing Your Preparation by Domain

You do not need an elaborate system, but the weights suggest a sensible order. Spend the most time where the exam spends the most questions, and start with the material that everything else depends on.

Week 1

Perform the Test (28%)

  • Work through the measurement procedures in MAH-2023 until you can find any topic quickly
  • Practice deployment and retrieval scenarios
Week 2

Evaluate the Test Site (24%)

  • Study site conditions that invalidate or compromise a test
  • Connect each condition to the correct field response
Week 3

Ethics, Client Communication and Records (48% combined)

  • Review the Code of Ethics and your role under RMP supervision
  • Study documentation expectations and QA/QC in MS-QA-2023
Week 4

Timed practice

  • Simulate the two-hour limit with the platform's reference tools only
  • Review misses by domain, not just by question

State Rules and Career Value

An NRPP certification is not presented as a substitute for a state license. Some states regulate radon professionals through their own licensing or acceptance rules, and what a state accepts can vary. Check your state's requirements separately before assuming the credential alone lets you work legally in your area.

On the career side, the credential signals to employers that you have been trained and tested on field procedure, ethics and documentation, and that you operate within a supervised quality system. Whether that translates into higher earnings depends on your employer, region and role. We avoid quoting salary figures here; our RMFT salary guide discusses earnings factors qualitatively. For additional definitions and background, see what RMFT certification is and the overview at RMFT certification.

When you are ready to test your knowledge against exam-style questions, the RMFT Exam Prep practice tests are organized around the five domains described above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does RMFT certification mean I can work without supervision?

No. An RMFT deploys and retrieves devices under the supervision and QA/QC oversight of an NRPP Measurement Professional within the same company, and the application requires that supervisor's Statement of Professional Responsibility.

How many questions are on the advertised exam?

The exam format advertised on the live registration page has 95 questions: 85 scored and 10 unscored trial items that are not identified. You have 2 hours. A replacement exam has been announced with a different format, so confirm your assigned version with NRPP.

What happens if I fail the exam?

You can retake it, but you must wait 30 days between attempts and may not exceed four attempts in 12 months. Each attempt costs USD 125 and is nonrefundable.

What can I use during the exam?

The exam platform provides MAH-2023, MS-QA-2023, a calculator and formulas. Personal reference materials, paper and your own calculator are prohibited. You also need a government-issued photo ID and must complete a room scan.
